​Covid-19 had a massive impact on the travel and tourism industry. Recovery from the pandemic is still ongoing. Cape Breton tourism, like tourism in the rest of Canada, has not yet fully recovered to the 2019 pre-pandemic levels. However, recovery growth is strong, and projections are that the 2023 will likely see tourism return to pre-pandemic levels.
Statistics Canada’s Tourism Activity Tracker shows that Nova Scotia tourism related activity was down 64% in December 2020 from the pre-pandemic December 2019 levels. Recovery began in May 2021 and by December 2021 tourism related activity had recovered about half of what was lost from the height of the pandemic. The trendline suggests steady growth moving forward barring other external influences.
Additional challenges for tourism operators persist as a result of covid-19 effects and the current economic environment. These include:

Shifts in tourist demographics (which can affect marketing and services)

Changes in attitudes towards personal safety, crowds and personal space

Changes in transportation and labour costs

Changes in types of activities and experiences sought by visitors
