2022

In 2022, the Cape Breton Island Tourism Training Network (CBITTN) began to conduct research initiatives.

 

194 individuals participated in surveys conducted across Unama'ki - Cape Breton Island.

2023

In 2023, additional surveys were created for specific locations at tourism operators, and capture visitor experience during the tourism season.

 

In total 2,410 individuals participated.

2024

In 2024, research conducted during this year included locations that will provide a year-to-year comparison while additional research was completed.

This was our highest engagement with 4,072 participants.

Unama’ki – Cape Breton Island 
Tourism Report 2024

This report explores the findings of the 2024 Cape Breton Island Visitor Experience Survey, a comprehensive analysis of visitor behaviors, preferences, and challenges. The report offers insights into key attractors like the Cabot Trail, visitor spending trends, and seasonal tourism potential. Strategic recommendations focus on improving infrastructure, enhancing winter tourism, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to strengthen the island’s position as a world-class, year-round destination. 2023 Research

2023 Summer Visitor Survey Report

The 2023 Cape Breton - Unama'ki Visitor Experience Survey was conducted using two separate surveys between June 28th and September 4th, 2023, to better understand the experiences and impressions of visitors to Cape Breton - Unama'ki and assist tourism operators, DMOs, local municipalities, and other business and community organizations with tourism-related decisions.

 

The data collected represents the experiences and opinions of over 350 summer visitors to Cape Breton Island. Most surveys were conducted orally by trained Cape Breton University MBA graduate students. Data for both surveys was collected at participating tourism destinations including Destination Cape Smokey, Iona Highland Village, the Village of Baddeck, Port of Sydney, Cheticamp Co-op and the St. Peter’s Visitor Information Centre.

2023 Baille nan Gàidheal | Highland Village Visitor Experience Survey Results

In July and August of 2023, the CBITTN conducted a survey of visitors to Baile nan Gàidheal | Highland Village on Cape Breton Island. The survey was created in collaboration with Highland Village and provides insight into the demographics, experiences, and opinions of summer visitors to Baile nan Gàidheal | Highland Village.

2023 Baddeck Area Visitor Experience Survey Report

​In the summer of 2023, the CBITTN collaborated with tourism operators and organizations across Unama’ki - Cape Breton to gather visitor data that directly impacted partner organizations. Partner organizations developed survey questions based on their needs and plans. One such partner organization was the Baddeck Area Business and Tourism Association (BABTA) which was interested in feedback on the experiences of visitors to Baddeck. BABTA has agreed to share their 2023 Visitor Experience Report here.

2023 Destination Cape Smokey Visitor Experience Survey Results

In July and August of 2023, the CBITTN conducted a survey of visitors to Destination Cape Smokey on Cape Breton Island. The survey was created in collaboration with Destination Cape Smokey and provides insight into the demographics, experiences, and opinions of summer visitors to Destination Cape Smokey.

2022 Research

​2022 Cruise Ship Passenger Survey

In 2022 the CBITTN undertook a pilot study to better understand the impact that labour shortages in the Cape Breton Tourism Industry have had on the experiences of cruise ship passengers visiting the island. This study functioned both as a way to gather data on the effects of labour shortages and as a dry run for our 2023 Cape Breton Island Visitor Survey.

2022 BHTM Students Survey

The Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management program at Cape Breton University contains approximately 230 students, of which, approximately 95% are from outside of Canada. This is significant potential workforce population for the Cape Breton Tourism Industry. The purpose of this study was to identify the future working and living plans for these students and identify factors that would lead international BHTM students to choose to live and work in Cape Breton.

2022 Fall CBITTN Research Report

​The CBITTN Fall 2022 Research Report summarises some of the research and studies that were conducted during the first six months of the Tourism Training Network. The report contains summaries of the Cruise Ship Passenger Survey as well as insights gained from geolocation and segmentation tools subscribed to by Destination Cape Breton.

Automation for Hotels and Tourism

Automation in the tourism industry has the potential to reduce labour costs and create a smoother guest experience. It is also a strategy that some operators are considering for dealing with labour shortages. During the summer of 2022, CBITTN conducted a brief survey of some of the tools and strategies for automating the tourism industry. This report discusses some of the more common automation techniques and assesses where they may prove most useful.
